The Manchester Cardiothoracic Consortium

The results of all operations performed by the surgeons in the consortium since 1997 are given here. The data is derived from corporate records at the Alexandra Hospital. The data given is divided into two groups

1.      First time coronary artery surgery – this includes all patients having first time coronary surgery either as routine, urgent or emergency operations, but excludes redo surgery. First time coronary artery surgery has made up the vast majority of our work over the last few years.

2.      All surgery – this includes all the operations we have undertaken since 1997 and includes first time coronary surgery, repeat (redo) surgery, valve replacements and repairs, and occasional other more complex procedures.

We have also given data for the national average mortality in 1999/2000 (the most recent data available) from the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of GB and Ireland (www.scts.org), and to enable these figures to be compared we have given 95% confidence intervals around our mortality. The bars on the graphs show the mortality and the lines superimposed on the bars show the confidence intervals.

Mortality for first time coronary artery surgery:
MCC compared to national average 1997 to 2001
Number of cases Deaths Mortality 95% CI National mortality
564 2 0.35% 0.1 to 1.4% 2%

Mortality for all open heart surgery:
MCC compared to national average 1997 to 2001
Number of cases Deaths Mortality 95% CI National mortality
742 10 1.5% 0.7 to 2.5% 3.9%
